The Jellyfish is a restaurant which is specialised in seafood. They have few, daily fresh created dishes focused on seafood but there is at least one vegetarian dish and one meat dish as well. The service is really nice and willing to give you plenty of information about the ingredients and their supplier.

I like their interior-atmosphere a lot. It is kind of a rustic-mediterranean style: they use white and light-blue colours and their tables are created of driftwood, which gives the room a warm look. And there is this tiny and lacy jellyfish which appears here and there.

We spent a nice evening there together with two friends. And we were all delighted by our choice. I had a seafood-soup and afterwards angler-fish with pea-puree. Really good, as you can see on this picture.

Erika’s Eck is a place for taxi drivers and all kinds of stranded people to have a coffee and a lusty snack at night. It is a very colorful mix of party people and people who finished their shift. The food is the best antidote for an upcoming hangover.

It’s good and simple German food. They sell sandwiches with roast pork, tartar or salmon. If this is not enough you can order a “Wiener Schnitzel”. Drink your last beer and enjoy this original atmosphere. Don’t go there before midnight, because that’s when they start selling their sandwiches.

If we are too tired to stay there we take our sandwiches to go and eat them at home. Believe me, you’ll feel better the next morning.

I think black delight is on a mission. They want to make you addicted to coffee. Thus the coffee they offer is a true delicacy. Besides their coffee specialties they offer some delicious snacks like small salads, tartes, sandwiches and some sweets. For me, the greatest thing of all is a small cake called „death by chocolate”. This needs no further description, just go there and try it.

Apart from all this I really like their interior design, outdoors as well as indoors. It is simple, elegant and warm. Back in the time when I worked for my last agency I often spent really inspiring and relaxing lunch times there with my favorite colleague. After an hour talk, two coffee and a „Death by chocolate” for two we always felt strong enough for the second half of the day.

One of my favorite cafés is a place called „liebes bisschen”. It is a very small café with lovely and detailed sticked interior design in a side street of the very lively and crowded Schanzenviertel.

They do not only have very good coffee specialties but also delicious cup cakes. Although cupcakes are famous and admired around the world this was Hamburgs first cupcake café. (I think meanwhile there are some more but not around that area.) Everything is made with love which you really feel when they serve your coffee and cup cakes at beautiful dishes.

The café was opened by three friends, one of them is an award winning pastry cook. All cup cake recipes are top secret and reach from really fruity ones to chocolate variants. I could die for the topping.

Go there, take a seat at the cosy couch next to the window and enjoy your coffee and delicious cup cakes apart from crowdy Schulterblatt. You find the coffee at Eifflerstraße 47, obliquely opposite of Saal II.

The Human Empire is a design and illustration studio that works for a lot of interesting and international clients, lots of them come from the fashion-, music-, art- or culture-section. For example they designed for a lot of musicians including Feist, Deathcab for Cutie or Architecture in Helsinki. They do good stuff, which you may see on their website.

Since 2007 they run a small store in the Schanzenviertel. You can buy creative things there from posters to clothes and books and accessories. 

All posters are created by young and aspiring international illustrators, graphic designers or artist and so are most of the clothes. Meanwhile they carry some interesting international fashion brands which are not easy get in hamburg such as Happy Socks, Sitka or Rvlt and hence Sandqvist. The books they offer cover the latest in design, typography or illustration, furthermore they have a beautiful selection of kids books and accessories. Prices are very affordable; you can buy posters from 10 EUR.

I go there whenever I need a special gift or just to buy myself new stuff for my walls or for my collection of design books. You will love it, if you are into in design and creative things and fashion.

Frankly spoken: this place is a little bit down-and-out. But I still love it. Normally it is the last stop on a long night (or maybe the second last, because last one will be “Erikas Eck”).

It is a bar located in the Schanzenstraße. It is quite crowded, smoky and the music is a little bit rocking but this place isn’t about dancing. It is about sitting at the bar (or standing at the street in front of this place in summertime) and drinking white russian.

We only go there for the white russian because we like it and it is really cheap. The word is: let’s go there for “one” white russian. But we never stick to this intention and honestly we never even have had the plan to do so.

This place has three separate spaces of 70 square meters. HausIII&70.

1) A Club for concerts and jam-sessions.

2) An Outbuilding (Anbau) for watching Tatort, readings and table fusball .

And 3) The hall (Saal) for theater, dance, classical music. It always offers three different programs, beside the Rote Flora. As different as day and night are, so it is here.

In the cosy cafe I like to eat simple, but nice breakfasts with latte macchiato and Franzbrötchen outside in the sun or inside with comfortable sofas. With their free wireless internet (just bring your notebook) you can write your assignments for university there or just chill all day long. When the sun goes down the Haus III&70 revives itself.

The small indoor-Kiosk is always worth the trip. The people are very mixed; from dancing queens to chillers, from artists to footballers, from students to professors. There are too many people there on the weekend, but it’s always in my plans.

All-around it’s a wonderful place to be.

This tiny pub has the craziest calendar of events in Hamburg: i.e. “Autumn Sucks Party”, “Club Madame – A Night with Paris (Hilton)”, “Oklahoma Ranch Radio Show”, “Disaster Disco for your Eyes and Ears”, the funny NIGHT TRASH, or the “Live Auction Show” (where you can sell all your old and nasty stuff in an auction show), or the “Konsumboykott Party”. Every time there is a different theme and different people.

It’s hard to explain this spot, go there and have fun! I am serious!

Indie, Rock and 80s music fans can feel at home here. People who like to dance between the twenty-something people are very at home here. This old inconspicuous forester’s house (that’s why it called “green hunter”) is the place for alternative concerts of unknown bands from all over the world.

The entrance fee is around € 2.00 to € 6.00 (you can’t negotiate the price). Every Wednesday there is “Band of the Week” (concerts starts 20:00) for free, give them a try!

The beer is cheap (€2.20). The wine is bad. You can sit in summer outside at tables, or inside on sofas.

During the weekends it is a well filled dance area. Or you can go upstairs to play table fusball or just relax in a relaxed ambiance on old sofas for smoking and talking about all the world.

Once in a while there are theme-nights like watching “Tatort” (famous German criminal series) on Sunday, other cult movies or radio play night.

At the moment they often have free entrance for concerts. Just check out the programme!

Established 1961 the snack stall Schorsch is the one and only for curried sausage (Currywurst) in Hamburg. Together with home-made potato salad or (like i prefer) bread, it’s the best combination.

The sausage is fried (not deep-fried!) and served with the best sauce ever. This curry-sauce is homemade and magic. If you order “hot”, your face turns red and you will sweat. It’s a trip down memory lane the snack stall is a small place: only 5 people can stand shoulder to shoulder at the bar.

If you want to meet a real Hamburgian “deern” (woman), go there and listen to cheeky Christel. If you are on the way from the Schanze to the “Kiez” (St. Pauli area), weak from hunger or just hungry for a mid-night snack, check out this place!
