The tiny and “rough-looking” gallery Hinterconti in Karoviertel started in the year 2000 and is run by a bunch of people. There is a nearly weekly change of exhibitions of international young artists.
Check out the website for current exhibitions as in these alternative gallery all goes along a lot slower. There is a new opening in mid [...]

Tired of sitting in cafes, in need of fresh air and a stroll among trees?
Kunstverein – Fancy new art

You want contemporary art? You can have it!
You find Kunstverein Hamburg close to the main station and Deichtorhallen (check the Deichtorhallen article). Kunstverein was founded in 1817 and is one of the oldest associations for art in Germany.
About 15 years ago the Kunstverein moved to the building at Klosterwall which used to be a market [...]

Kunst- und Kulturverein LINDA eV – A small gallery

This small place for art is set in a very nice old building downtown St. Pauli and the store used to be a bakery and even a liquor store once which you can tell from the old tiles in the rooms.
They regularly show small exhibitions from German and foreign artists. The gallery is an easy-going and “non-posh” [...]

3001 – Cinema mon amour

This – kind of „alternative” – cinema in a backyard in Schanze plays very extra-ordinary movies, and quite often you find the original versions with subtitles. So it’s not only for people with German language skills. Definitely not something you will find quite often in Hamburg as Germans like to synchronise movies!
Don’t expect any Blockbusters [...]

Holthusenbad – One of the most beautiful Spa’s

What’s better than not letting any programme or „must-do” bother you and escape a rainy and windy day in Hamburg (you might experience quite a few if you are coming between October and April…) in a Sauna!
But be prepared! German Sauna means that you have to – GET UNDRESSED! So if you don’t like this [...]

Saal II – A classic

This old time favourite offers tasteful breakfasts, a nice setting for an afternoon coffee or tea – and a place for beer and a chat in the evening.
Saal II used to be a shop which you can tell by the beautiful tiles – which turned little yelowish by years of guests with severe smoking habits. [...]

Far away from those places where tourists end up but where the locals rest after their Saturday shopping you will find that small and neat cafe.
The friendly owner will provide you with some of the best self-made cakes in town. Made right in front of you! After a stroll along the canal and maybe a [...]

Lille Ø – An island for style, fashion, dessous

Lille Ø literally means „Small island” in Danish. And this little island on Eppendorfer Weg is another good place in Hamburg for stylish danish clothes.
The store used to be a place for motorbikes and bicycles and provides now very sportive clothes from Hummel, very feminine stuff from Rosemunde Copenhagen. Great are the jackets, 1937 Manchester [...]

If you think that „Hamburger Schule” is a school for naughty Northerners, if you think that Hamburg is a provincial place and can’t produce anything solid as it`s neither Berlin nor London, if you might believe it`s not possible to rap in German, let alone in Northern German, if you might even believe that Germans [...]
