Lokal 1 is still somewhat of an insider tip, although it is truly one of the top-notch restaurants in Hamburg. The two chefs, Hagen Schäfer and Robert Wullkopf, are freakishly in love with the produce they use. Everything that comes into the kitchen and onto your plate is bio-sustainable and of the highest possible quality. The centerpieces of every dish are also local. You can choose a menu of anywhere between 3 and 9 (!) courses.
Since it is a rather small place, most dishes seem special, sometimes even private. You can feel and taste that there is a story to every course, nothing is by accident here. This is excitement-food. The love for the produce also shows in the selection of the wine list. This might be the best place to drink top-class German wine in Hamburg. If you can’t decide on one bottle, I recommend putting your faith in the hands of the excellent staff. You will not be disappointed (promise).
Oh, and a word on the atmosphere: Superb. The seating in the back room is extremely cool. In a good way! Nice chairs, wooden tables, some concrete and cozy lighting. As for the paintings on the wall….well, you’ve got to decide for yourself. But have a glass of Riesling first.
You should make a reservation (ask to be seated in the back room). They also offer their delicious homemade stuff for sale, i.e. honey, marmalade or “Wurst”. They make a great souvenir.
