Coffee is art – just without cutting your ear off…
Hamburg is a stronghold of the coffee trade, roasting and tasting, because it’s been a commercial town with a port since 1189. In the last years Hamburg has been getting more and more small, excellent coffee roasters like Elbgold and – tada! – the Public Coffee Roasters. In 2014 they opened a little coffee room in my favorite quarter Neustadt, which feels like a small village filled with tiny ateliers, workshops and manufacturers. People know each other, it is an almost homelike feeling to stroll around and get a cup of coffee in the neighbourhood.
The Public Coffee Roasters coffee room is located in the Wexstraße, just beside cute shops selling arts and fancy handcrafted products. I like the lovely interior and the very friendly staff who are always in the mood to tell you everything about coffee beans, the right roasting or the best brewing.
Sitting there just behind the window, looking onto the street and sipping this delicious coffee or espresso – I love those still and pleasant moments. Every few weeks they offer a public “cupping” where you can taste newly discovered coffee varieties. The coffee beans are roasted in Hamburg as well: in Entenwerder (just beside the beautiful Entenwerder 1!) they renovated an old ponton and built up their own roast facility.
