One of my favorite cafés is a place called „liebes bisschen”. It is a very small café with lovely and detailed sticked interior design in a side street of the very lively and crowded Schanzenviertel.

They do not only have very good coffee specialties but also delicious cup cakes. Although cupcakes are famous and admired around the world this was Hamburgs first cupcake café. (I think meanwhile there are some more but not around that area.) Everything is made with love which you really feel when they serve your coffee and cup cakes at beautiful dishes.

The café was opened by three friends, one of them is an award winning pastry cook. All cup cake recipes are top secret and reach from really fruity ones to chocolate variants. I could die for the topping.

Go there, take a seat at the cosy couch next to the window and enjoy your coffee and delicious cup cakes apart from crowdy Schulterblatt. You find the coffee at Eifflerstraße 47, obliquely opposite of Saal II.

“Voilà, mademoiselle, c’est ça!”

“Oh la la, mon dieu – c’est tellement bon que je pourrais tout manger!”

Here, in the middle of lively Altona/Ottensen, you can explore a small french island. More than 6 people will never fit in that small cafe, but if you’re lucky and you’re one of them better try all of the tons of lovely handmade french delicatessen like Eclairs (of course), Baguettes, Croissants, Mille-feuilles, Brioche, Petit Pains, Tarte, Tartelettes etcetera and the coffee there is “trés delicious” as well.

If you want to buy something “to-go” you’ll get it like a small present. The staff is french and very charming. No toilets available. Always a place to jump in, drink a coffee, speak french or not, talk to people coming in, or read “Le Monde” or just relax… (listen to music like this).

Ok, this post is a bit different and not really bound to a location in the city but to good Hamburgian bakeries. Now imagine you’re in Paris going out for breakfast. What would you order? At least a croissant I guess?

In Hamburg you would order a “Franzbrötchen” which is a sweet pastry with cinnamon. One story about this Hamburg specialty says, it is probably a reference to the croissant during the occupation of the city by Napoleon (1806-1814). Another story claims it was probably a Hamburgian baker who invented the pastry after he roasted a french bread in his pan.

However… it tastes so delicious! You will find this specialty in every good Hamburgian bakery at any location in the city. I found a very good one (Franz & Friends) at the main rail station which is specialized in Franzbrötchen-creations and has become my daily spot for a short stop before or after work. They for example offer the Franzbrötchen with apples, cheeries, chocolate and the good old traditional one with sugar an cinnamon. Try it, you will love it!
