Every winter the Finns use most of their outdoor sports fields as ice-skating rinks. One of the biggest ones is located in the heart of Kallio. It has limited opening hours as it’s used for training by local ice-hockey-teams for example. The field is really huge and it’s great to come here with friends, skate and have a hot chocolate at the small café linked to the field. Definitely my favourite spot to go in the city!
Another great tip: when the seawater freezes and the ice there gets thick enough, the sports department of Helsinki removes the snow from the surface and evens out ice-skating tracks on the sea! It’s also possible to kiteboard there!
They have opened just recently, and there are two to be found in the close Helsinki area (20 min tramride from the centre, no price for these)! The picture above is from the rink in Munkkiniemi beach. Check it out here!
