This is one of the most beautiful possible spots, if you schedule your visit correctly!
Haagan Alppiruusupuisto, also known as “Rodopuisto”, is a park full of rhododendrons, the beautiful bushes full of big, colorful flowers. The park was originally founded in the 1970s for research and refinement of rhododendrons. This means it has the flowers in probably all the possible colors and sizes, and during the peak of the blooming the park is full of amazing colors.
Situated in Haaga the park is a bit outside the city center, but it is easily reachable by commuter train. It’s only two stops away from the central railway station and Huopalahti is the closest station to the park.
Usually the best time to go is in the beginning of June or mid-June – but naturally this varies every year, depending of the weather, for example. But as the park is full of different species of both azaleas and rhododendrons which all bloom at slightly different times, the season continues from late May to late June. You have to visit the park several times to see all the different species blooming!
As the bushes have been planted in a forest, it creates a magical atmosphere: it is absolutely lovely to wander along the paths among the pine trees and the 2 to 5 meters high rhododendron bushes full of huge, colorful flowers. Among the paths there are also several benches and some tables, which makes the park a lovely place for a small picnic!
