Helsinki had city bikes before, but the first try was a bit unfortunate, as most of the bikes ended up in the bottom of the Baltic sea. But hopefully this time it will work better!
The second coming of the Helsinki city bikes was last summer, and I’m really happy about the return, as I’ve seen the success of the Velib-system in Paris and I was always thinking that Helsinki could use one, too! Our transportation system is already pretty good with buses, trams and metro, but bikes are a nice addition.
Personally I love cycling and I have my own bike, but the problem with biking is when you are not sure where you’ll end up and don’t want to drag your bike around all night or when your friends don’t have bikes. Also, as the cycling season tends to be a bit short in Finland, city bikes are a good choice for people who don’t have their own bike. And as my own bike is quite old and in a relatively bad condition, the city bikes with their 3 gears is actually a really good option…
So far the city bike stations can be found mostly in the city center, but they have already expanded the area from last year. It’s easy to find bike stations, they seem to be everywhere, and quite conveniently situated. There are also stations for tourists, where it is possible to use the bikes without the usual registration.
