Super nice and durable Pelago bikes are designed and assembled in Helsinki. They used to have a home in Vallila, but today the ‘flagship’ store is located near the city centre in Kalevankatu. The name Pelago is short for archipelago which is one of the prettiest parts of the bikes’ homeland. So the name probably has nothing to do with a commune in Tuscany, except the beauty and easy-going spirit.
Bike designs range from stylish commuting to all year round urban transport. Simple, strong and practical, they like to say. I have been fascinated by this kind of functional minimalism lately. Take the gears for example with my good old hybrid. During its 12 years of service I rarely used more than 5 out of its 21 gears. So less is more with bikes as well, I guess.
Besides actual bikes, there’s a nice selection of bags, saddles, books and other biking gear. And if you are interested about local bike events, like Helsinki Winter Tweed Run, they probably know about them in here. You can spot them on Twitter and Instagram too (pelagobicycles).
