Hakaniemi Hall is one of the few old indoor fresh food markets we have in Helsinki. This one shop there, Reinin Liha is where I go for my meat for special occasions.
Sorry vegans but at Reini they have the best steak, roast beef and lamb from Åland, they give you advice on to how to prepare the meat you buy. They seem totally professional about all that red stuff that may look cruel when raw, but in the oven or barbecue or a frying pan will turn into a brown, delicious dinner to enjoy with friends and family.
I actually worked at Hakaniemi Hall one summer as a teen, in a bread and pastries store and gained 8 kilos in two months! My co-worker Paula was one year older than me and she was from Eastern Finland. She was so funny, and spoke a hilarious dialect. We giggled a lot, mostly at the expense of the customers. I wonder where she is now, and if life’s treated her good. I’m sure she became an excellent physician, she was studying to become one.
The smell of the place (fruit, fish, cheese, nuts, flowers, coffee all mixed) always brings back those memories, and how Paula and I mockingly flirted with the delivery boy whom we thought was muscular and good-looking but oh, so dumb. (I so need some of that endless self-confidence back asap!)
P.S. Don’t skip the second floor!
