The market square in the old harbour is by far the best spot in Helsinki! There are orange tents where you can buy Finnish berries like cloudberries, fruits, meat pies, ice cream, but the best thing you can buy is coffee and a doughnut (in the shape of a pig!). You can buy fresh fish straight from the boats or you can take one to go to the islands in front of Helsinki.
People living nearby stop there for their morning coffee and to buy a take away lunch on their way to work. In summer it is the best place for a coffee and people watching. In winter nothing warms you up like a cup of mulled wine when it is -20 Celsius degrees and windy outside.
In the old harbor there is an old beautiful Market Hall where you can buy fresh vegetables and tasty meat to prepare a delicious dinner. They also sell all sorts of tea, spices cheap sandwiches and sushi. I am lucky to live just a 10 minute walk away, so I stop at the square several times in a week.
I love the place because it is very Finnish, but it also has a very international feeling, thanks to the tourist visiting! The service is excellent all day from the early morning and customers are relaxed, so it is absolutely the best place to start your day! Just keep an eye on the seagulls, because they are famous for arrogantly stealing ice creams and doughnuts!
