Like I’ve written before, I have several favorite cafes in Helsinki, and all have their own advantages. Viola has probably the nicest environment, as it is situated in a small, imperial wooden house in the University of Helsinki’s botanical garden in Kaisaniemi. The entrance to the garden is free (but entrance to the beautiful, old glasshouse in the garden with exotic plants costs € 9), so on my way to the cafe I always take a walk in the garden admiring all the plants and trees. Then I have my coffee on the terrace surrounded by flowers. Lovely!
After having lunch or coffee I like to go out by the gate next to the cafe and continue my way by the Kaisaniemi shore, enjoying the scenery of sea and boats.
Viola serves nice and simple soups and salads for lunch from Monday to Sunday, and brunch on Saturdays. Whether I’m on my lunch hour or just enjoying a day off, Viola and its surroundings always have the most relaxing atmosphere.
Going to Viola is definitely one of my summer traditions that I hold on to year after year.
