Kanaat is one of the few restaurants lined up next to Suleymaniye mosque. It’s famous for their dry beans according to the concept of a traditional esnaf lokantasi (tradesmen restaurant). Frequent visitors are students from Istanbul University, and many city dwellers come here from every part of the city just to eat dry beans. Not surprisingly, customers are locals rather than tourists.
Besides dry beans, Ali Baba Kanaat also serves döner and a few other classics of the Turkish (home) kitchen like soups, stewed lamb etc. My classic choice on the menu is dry beans, rice and pickles. Nearly all tables are occupied at lunch time but service is fast and it doesn’t take a long time to be seated.
If you want to experience the Turkish home kitchen, Kanaat is the place for a memorable taste experience.
