I am always asked by my foreigner friends what Istanbul offers in terms of modern art. The answer is countless but there are a couple of galleries that I especially love to visit within a specific time frame. Apel Gallery is one of them and to be honest my favorite spot.
I am keen on their policy of concentrating on local artists. This way we can show our creative side. You can perceive contemporary Turkish artists woven in between a bustling modern city and an endless cultural background. Ms. Terzioglu, owner of the Apel Gallery, is a lovely intellectual who will be more than happy to guide you through her gallery if you have a chance to encounter her.
The atmosphere of the gallery is like a small cosy home right off of the wide pedestrian thoroughfare of Istiklal Cadesi. It’s a small area but gives you an outburst of the art displayed. It has a very small garden that isolates you from the city and allows you to delve into a peaceful mindset engraved with art.
Apel Gallery is 15 years old and still stands as one of the most productive galleries in Istanbul.
Gurbet Kuşları (Birds of Exile) the artist says, ‘is the unearthing of her forgotten joint work and bidding a fond farewell to the project.’ T
