Eminönü fish sandwich boats are famous throughout the country as many times it’s featured in vintage Turkish movies or songs. In history, fish sandwiches are sold by fisherman boats on the same spot, mostly after returning from fishing. This chaos, both on sea and land, was disciplined by the city’s government a few years ago and now there are only 3 large boats licensed to continue this tradition.
Fish sandwich is the only piece on the menu, where half of the (traditional) bread is stuffed with a fish, green salad and onion and dressed with lemon juice. In front of all three boats low stools and tiny tables are available. Although they all look occupied at first glance, finding a seat takes merely a few minutes as the turnover is incredibly high.
Another traditional thing to accompany a fish sandwich with is pickle juice, filled with pickles. They’re sold separately just in front of the boats for TL 1.50 in plastic glasses. You can also enjoy beverages from the boats and what’s missing is paper tissues. But don’t worry, you can buy some for a few cents around the area.
You can not miss the fish boats located next to Galata Bridge, across from the Spice Bazaar, so once you are in this area, give the Turkish style of fish & chips a try, you will not regret it!
