Robinson Crusoe 389 is one of the best bookstores in Istanbul, but sadly it had to move to yet another location, due to high rents on Istiklal Street. You can now get your book fix at Robinson’s shop at the nearby Yeni Carsi Caddesi, the street going down next to the Galatasaray high school. This location also houses Gon Çizgi Roman – Robinson’s sister shop selling a wide variety of comic books.
Robinson Crusoe 389 has a lot of good books both in English and Turkish: fiction, non-fiction, new arrivals, best sellers as well as a good selection of books related to the arts, visual culture, cultural studies or academics. You can also find some stationery items and internationally published guidebooks. Moreover, Robinson Crusoe 389 sells a wide selection of local and international magazines and periodicals. The English speaking staff are also very helpful, don’t hesitate to ask for a book. They also set up artist/writer talks in the shop.
If you’re one of those people who like spending time in bookshops, browsing through pages, catching up on the new arrivals, or following your favorite magazine, this place is just for you. Go there even if you’re not looking for something specific: English language books on Istanbul and Turkey are definitely worth checking out, and would make good literary souvenirs if you’re in the city only for a couple of days.
Robinson Crusoe 389 also has a branch within the marvelous SALT Galata complex, where you can browse an exhibition or work at the library.
