One of my favorite areas in Beyoğlu is Meşrutiyet Caddesi, a historical avenue with charming restaurants, hotels and galleries. It is only steps away from the crowded Istiklal Caddesi, yet here you have the chance to find serenity among really good food. My recent discovery, Sahrap Pera, justifies that.
Celebrity chef Sahrap Soysal’s new restaurant occupies two floors. Both upstairs and the long table near the entrance are suitable for big gatherings and celebrations. It is also great for smaller groups and one on one sessions with old pals (you can actually hear what the other person is saying). Just order a drink and enjoy the casual atmosphere with old nostalgic Turkish songs playing in the background.
Choosing your order is the trickiest part. Everything will seem tempting if you’re into Turkish cuisine or wanting to discover it. I recommend you try and share as many different mezzes as possible (easier if you come with a large group). My favorites: hummus with shrimp and bulgur with walnut balls from Antioch. Sahrap’s starters are also delicious and some portions are pretty large. Share lamb’s liver flavored with various spices, mantı (Turkish ravioli) or meat stuffed chard leaves. Their special pilaf with mussels from the main courses is a taste not to miss and my favorite in the entire menu.
