When it comes to popular avenues in Istanbul, a list without Bağdat Caddesi would not be considered as one. The 9 km street on the Asian side is full of international brands, chain restaurants and of course, people. As a local, rip-off restaurants and the crowdedness frustrate me frequently. Luckily, some spots are my safety nets and The Crepe Escape is one of them.
Located on one of the side streets, The Crepe Escape is a creperie and pancake house as the name tells. The corner cafe has a sincere, casual atmosphere with its few tables and green walls. The menu is composed of salty and sweet crepes and pancakes as well as salads, ice creams, coffee and tea. If you are a salty tooth, my recommendation would be the New Yorker crepe with mushrooms, ham and mustard sauce. For sweet tooth, Black&White crepe with cocoa, vanilla, strawberries, pistachio, white and dark chocolate can be the perfect choice. They also make a surprise crepe cake every week and never use food dyes or preservatives.
The crepe and pancake business in Istanbul is booming right now. Cookline Pancakes is another alternative in Bağdat Caddesi and Munchies is also great if you are around Moda. Sure, they can’t do exactly the French way but whether salty or sweet tooth you won’t be disappointed.
Update: The Crepe Escape opened a second branch in Caddebostan, you can view the address on their main page.
