It’s always discussed and mentioned how Constantinople was taken over by the Ottomans and converted to İstanbul. This of course is a very important fact in history and a turning point in social history in this part of the world. I will obviously not go into the details of the siege but there is a very important matter to point out about it.
Obviously during that time human power was more effective than any machinery to conquer a city. Hence Mehmet II (a.k.a fatih Sultan Mehmet) who was brilliant in war planning ordered his people to build cannon balls that would be very effective against the city walls of Constantinople. According to history most of the sieges were driven off by the strong walls of the city and Mehmet II had to work on this if he ever wanted to conquer Constantinople.
So huge cannons were built and they were used by the Ottoman army against the long lasting walls of Constantinople. Obviously as documented in the photo, the rock cannon balls were a smash hit that basically ruined the walls and allowed the army to flow into the city.
If you have a chance I would definitely suggest for you to visit the Yedikule Museum to see the documented cannon balls and get the feeling of the conquest.
