Among quite a few outstanding buildings in Kiev, there is an exceptional one – The House with Chimeras. Located right by the President’s office just a few minutes walk from Maidan, this odd grey structure has something magnetic about it.
A house built as a private mansion by Gorodetsky, Kyiv’s most recognized architect, it looks more like a crazy fairytale sculptor’s fantasy. The roof and the walls are covered with statues of mermaids and toads, heads of deers and rhinos, water lillies and fishing nets. One of the sculptures is special – the legend says that finding a crocodile among all the building’s creatures will make your wish come true. And this is not the only legend of House with Chimeras. People say that the spooky, somewhat scary look of the building is the architect’s way of mourning his daughter, who drowned in the Dnipro river.
Writing this article reminded me that I haven’t seen the house in quite a while. Will have to include it in my next weekend walking path.
