Zbruchskyi Idol – Hidden gem

Although Sofiyska and Mykhailivska squares are the most obvious places a tourist would visit, there are still some hidden gems here which sometimes even locals don’t notice.

The one I’d like to tell you about is located between these two squares, on a passage – Volodymyrskyi proyizd. In Soviet times, this passage was known as The Road of Ancestors among tour guides. In the ’80s, when Kiev was celebrating its 1500th anniversary, several monuments were placed along this passage so that tourists could trace Kiev Rus’s history while walking from one square to another. Now there are only a few left and Zbruchskyi Idol is one of them.

It is hidden in a small park, to the left from the Hyatt hotel, try to find it! This idol is a copy of a real 9th century idol that was discovered in western Ukraine and which was named after the river Zbruch where it was found. The Idol is a stone pillar that has four sides and represents four pagan gods – Moksha, Perun, Dazhboh and Lada. It is also divided into three sections from top to bottom which represent gods, real life and afterlife.

You can also spot one of the seven beautiful Termens Fountains right next to it!
