Our favorite Lisbon special local shops, stores and malls. This is where our Lisbon locals do their shopping… Lisbon insider tips: always up-to-date!

A Fábrica dos Chapéus Lisbon (by Erik Lassche)

ore like a “Hat Warehouse” actually. If you like hats, visit this nice little store right in the middle of Rua da Rosa.

Being located in trendy bairro Alto, we are of course not talking about old lady hats! Here it’s all trendy. You can find all sorts of hats: male or female, expensive or affordable, gangster or Cinderella.

The owners have set up shop only in 2008 and are eager to make the store a success. Service is therefore really great and people are friendly.

Take your hat off before entering!

It seems that business is OK, since they already opened a second store a little bit further up the street. This store is more dedicated to accessories.

A Vida Portuguesa Lisbon (by Veronica)

A Vida Portuguesa is the kind of store that mesmerizes every visitor: on display you’ll find an amazing archive of genuine and typical Portuguese products, some of which I thought were no longer in production. It’s a walk through memory lane, which brings great childhood recollections!

Located in the late David & David building (an old perfume company and warehouse), the store maintains a lot of the place’s original features.

This is the spot to find Portuguese goods with superb quality, design and authentic retro flair. They have a careful selection of the best kitchen, home, bath and beauty products, as well as school supplies, ceramics, jewelery, toys and much more!

You must visit this place to discover its real Portuguese spirit – as it’s claimed on the company’s manifesto “These are our products. These products make us who we are”!

Vee’s Favourites – Old advertising posters, Bordalo Pinheiro porcelain designs.

Rita’s Favourites – Portuguese crafts designer Rosa Pomar tote bags made with chita (a vintage flower-pattern fabric) and Ach. Brito hand-made soaps.

ANDY WARHOL by Pepe Jeans Lisbon (by Erik Lassche)

How could I miss it: it’s right in front of my former house in lovely Principe Real.

Have a look at the new Pepe Jeans store, exclusively featuring their new And Warhol line. The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Arts granted them a license and Pepe Jeans produced the goods.

The store offers a wide range of “PopArt meets Fashion”: Marylin on a t shirt, Campbell on jeans, Elvis on your sweater, you name it. Besides clothes, the store features porcelain, clocks, furniture and other decorative items.

It is housed in a a beautiful building. The contemporary interior gives it a nice mixture of old meets new.

Bairro Arte Lisbon (by Claudio Carneiro)

Let´s say I have a birthday dinner somewhere in Bairro Alto. And I had the busiest day and hadn’t have any time to buy a present. No problem, now we have Bairro Arte to solve our lack of gift-shops during nightlife.

Bairro Arte, besides being a gift shop, is also an art gallery. It’s an art gallery like any other, but as any other art gallery it’s unique by nature. Nevertheless, one thing Bairro Arte can’t be called is a simple gift-shop, for each thing they sell is very exclusive and original. I feel like being in a shop in Barcelona when enter the shop, because the stuff they sell is creative and colorful as Barcelona itself. For example, they have marble tiles with nice and fun paintings, giant kangaroos statues for our living room, puffs in shape of balls, trendy bags and many things more.

The building where Bairro Arte is installed is a very nice example itself of Lisbon old architecture and a well-restored building. And it has a very picturesque and outstanding chimney. The entrance is in the middle of the building, which divides the room for the shop and the room for the art gallery. I always take more time on the shop side. Shame on me!

Bertrand livreiros Lisbon (by Veronica Leitao)

The Bertrand Bookstore in Rua Garret opened in 1773, and it’s the oldest store from the Bertrand chain (the first one, built in 1732, was devastated by the Lisbon 1755 Earthquake).

Bertrand, which once was a privileged space of cultural debate and a literary club frequented by the intellectual elite of the city, is now transformed in a regular bookstore, but keeps a few peculiarities that are worth a visit.

Still located in the original building, the shop has an amazing quantity of books, divided into maze-sections that respect the original architectural features of the space.

The staff is polite, helpful and glad to be at service when asked to. You also won’t be disturbed if you just wish to sit quietly and read a novel.

This is an excellent spot to relax and recharge batteries, and can as well be the place to find information about Lisbon and Portugal.

Rita’s favorites – Top selection of travel and art books.

Vee’s favorites – Great place to find hidden book marvels as well as a great selection of magazines from all over the world.

Brio Biological Supermarket Lisbon (by Claudio Carneiro)

It was inaugurated on August, 25th, with the specific goal of making bio-products reachable for anyone. Everyone knows that there is only one and huge problem with biological products: they are insanely expensive! But Brio supermarket arrived to change the rules, making good bio-products available for much fair prices.

It feels good to know you are buying a reliable product and helping to increase this kind of market, which I know it’s the best thing for the environment. It takes from nature without damaging it. I love their huge offer of cereals, where you can fill your bag with the quantity you need. I confess it’s even hard for me to describe everything they sell there, since they always surprise me with the variety of bio-products that exists up to date.

What I can tell you is that Brio, apart from providing bio-products, it is nothing different from an ordinary supermarket. I buy anything I need there, even good imported products. All bio, off course!

Cool de Sac Lisbon (by Cool de Sac Lisbon (by Cool de Sac))

Let’s start with the name – Cool de Sac. It’s definitely a word game, taking the original word – cul de sac and turning it into cool.

This little treasure clothing shop opened a bit over a month ago, and it has fantastic brands such as Repetto (who doesn’t love a good pair of flats?) and Paul and Joe Sister, among others.

You can usually find the owner there – Maria Luisa is as lovely as her store. If you take a look around the racks, you can easily see that she has a good knowledge of what to place in the Lisbon fashion scene, without being mainstream.

If you have a party, a casual date or you simply love cool brands this is where to go.

Have to mention once again that you can just punch this in in the famous tour from Príncipe Real all the way to Largo de Camões. This is a must-stop!

Vee’s Favorites: The stunning necklaces and the collection from Ba&Sh.

Rita’s Favorites: Quircky and cool french labels – j’adore!

Crew Hassan Lisbon (by )

Unlike really any other space in Lisbon Crew Hassan exudes a sense of laid back familiarity along with a gung-ho ‘do-it-yourself’ spirit.

Crew Hassan comprises two enterprises: on the ground floor, open to the street is the shop where you can buy ‘alternative’ handmade crafts, such as bags and badges, as well as secondhand records or else you can have a coffee and cake and have your hair done.

If you venture outside the shop and follow the covered walkway down the back to the stairs, and then climb those stairs, you will find a hidden gem of Lisbon. At night the bar and venue upstairs comes alive with DJs, live music and art spread out through the tiny rooms. You will find the most laid back of Lisbon youth sprawled across the mismatched and broken furniture and you will have a unique Lisbon experience.

Delidelux Lisbon (by Rita Esgalhado)

Delidelux is the place to find a wide choice of international products (good Italian and French selection) as well as the finest national specialties (excellent for Portuguese wine, cheese and seafood preserves).

We also have to mention that the fruit and vegetables on display are always fresh and most importantly, they taste like old times :) !

Apart from being a Delicatessen and Gourmet Store, Delidelux has also a Bistrô area. Depending on the weather, you can choose to stay inside or enjoy the river view and sun in the terrace.

If you go there on a weekend or a national holiday, you must taste the Brunch (served from 10:00 until 16:00). Otherwise, the menu includes a lot of options from a simple snack to a complete meal.

The cuisine is mostly fusion (with marked Italian and French influences), but they make an effort to mix it with some traditional Portuguese ingredients.

Overall it’s a superb place to chill after work or in the weekends (albeit a bit crowded sometimes)!

P.S.: It’s useful to know that all the ingredients used in the menu are available in store, so if you leave the Bistrô craving for more, you can always try and cook it yourself!

Rita’s favourites – Bistrô: cheese and charcuterie plates, yogurt with fruits and honey. Store: sesame bagels, cumin gouda cheese, Italian products selection.

Vee’s favourites – Bistrô: Sunday Brunch – to die for. Store: Kumin teas, Cantucinni biscottis.

Espaço Tintin Lisbon (by Claudio Carneiro)

This is the place I have always hoped it would open in Lisbon, and it did last year, by the end of November. The only Tintin store I have visited till now has always been in Brussels, and although the Lisbon store is not as big as the Brussels one, you can find in here almost everything the trademark Tintin sells, such as postales, pins, agendas, notebooks and PVC figures. They also sell clothing for all seasons, books, watches and miniatures of the famous car from Hergé stories… There is even a room filled with Tintin’s book covers, which belong to the owner and Tintin fan, Paulo Ferreira de Almeida.

At the same place, you have a very nice and cozy Cafe-Lounge with also recalls Hergé Character’s heroism, as it has some very nice original lithographs of Tintin books as wall decoration. What attracted me most, besides being a cafe with Tintin’s allusion, is the way the tables are organized, making each space of the cafe very different and private. The menu holds no surprises, except for the Belgian beers, of course. I suggest their muffin – unbelievably good!

The only problem the cafe still faces is a lack of organization. Sometimes the delay in the service is just unacceptable, but I like the place so much that I really never cared about that.

They also serve lunch, as a “meal of the day” basis and salads and are opened till really late, and best of all, on Mondays.

Fabrica @ Benetton Lisbon (by Erik Lassche)

I love this place! It is “hidden” at the top floor of the Benetton shop at the beginning of Rua Garrett. Fabrica is the Benetton Group international communications research center (I had to llok it up as well!). This space has an ever-changing variety of design objects, both useful and useless, but always interesting. It displays work of Portuguese artists (as for instance JIMMY styleshop does) and international works. All items are for sale, ofcourse.

Besides this “shop”, half of the space is dedicated to temporary exhibitions. This means that you will always find something new and interesting when you visit (especially compared with Benetton clothes, but that’s a personal opinion).

If you are not one convinced yet: you can step out on one of the small balconies and have a bird’s-eye view of Rua Garrett.

Fabrico Infinito Lisbon (by Rita Esgalhado)

This particular store has a very unique slogan: “In nature nothing repeats itself, there aren’t two identical trees, two birds alike, two rain drops alike, two kisses alike. In this Fabrico Infinito also everything is unique and doesn’t repeat itself. It doesn’t come back. Enjoy. And be happy.” (by José Trabucho).

In Fabrico Infinito different types of original and peculiar things come together. You have an area of designer products from books, cd’s, jewelery, great chandeliers and also a wide selection of Brazilian artsy products such as bags, bathing suits or even plastic shoes that smell like strawberries.

In the back of the store you have a sort of delicatessen with divine cakes, which is a perfect place to just chill and enjoy the view. If you are in a working mood, just bring your laptop because here you have wireless internet.

Most of the products are biological (and really tasty!), and even the tea is served in a beautiful golden china set – this place is all about the details, you definitely shouldn’t miss it!

Rita’s favourites: Great music selection.

Galeria Margarida Pimentel Lisbon (by Andreia Tavares)

If Mother Nature wore jewelry, Margarida Pimentel is where she’d shop.

Organic and abstract, this designer’s beautiful, 3-dimensional morsels of movement and flow are the kind of stand-alone jewelry that make a statement without saying a word. Each piece is superbly crafted entirely by hand and is either one-of-a-kind or of limited edition. All are made from gold and silver (the real deal, not just plated), mostly brushed metal and many incorporating precious stones or pearls.

On that note, it should come as no surprise that this jewelry is not quite for those on a budget – prices start at close to €200 for a ring – but I firmly believe a little indulgence every so often never hurt anyone. Still, if nothing else, at least stop by for a look.

The store is located within the Centro Cultural de Belém complex, close to the Jerónimos monastery.

Gourmet El Corte Inglés Lisbon (by Veronica)

Do you know when you are in a mood for something pretty good and amazing and don’t know where to find it? This is it.

This little piece of heaven has all the good stuff you dream of.

There is Neuhaus and Godiva for those who have a sweet tooth. Amazing cookies, maple syrup or even bellinis. You dream it, they have it.

Amazing pastas from Italy, and my personal favorite – cheeses.

Every time we get to winter season, they have this amazing cheese called mont d’or. This is the closest you’ll ever get to heaven.

Also they have a very good selection of wines, being named by Revista de Vinhos (Wine Magazine) as a wine reference store. If you particularly like Ice Tea, they have the best one ever – Arizona lemon Iced tea. It’s to die for!!

I know this is an amazing place. Go check it out.

JIMMY Styleshop Lisbon (by erik lassche)

This design store is located in the Hotel Bairro Alto, near Praça de Camões. The have another store inside the Ritz Four Season hotel.

It hosts some very interesting items, all of them are made in Portugal by Portuguese artists and most of them are inspired in traditional local themes. You can find here, for instance, modern interpretations of Virgin Maria and Santo António statues. Or reinterpretations of the classic Portuguese Gallo de Barcelos. Go here to get a different souvenir from Portugal, one that shows that Lisbon is becoming more and more a creative hub.

The prices are very accessible and the interior of the shop is beautiful.

Máteria Prima Lisbon (by Adam Standring)

Located right at the top of Bairro Alto, your perserverence in tracking this shop down ill certainly be rewarded if you are a fan of the more avant garde forms of electronica and indie music.

Sharing its premises in Lisbon with a lovely boutique clothing shop (no suggestion here that it gives the girls something to do whilst the guys browse records!) Máteria Prima offers the very best of the slightly weird and wonderful of the music world – from classics (like Aphex Twin and Autechre) to latest releases (The xx and Atlas Sound).

As well as having a great selection of vinyl and cds, which the shopkeepers are only too happy to let you sample before you buy, the shop has a great catalogue of Portuguese and foreign music and art magazines.

If your wallet (or luggage) isn’t going to extend to a bit of music shopping Máteria Prima is also an excellent place to find out the latest in concerts, clubs and art and the shop is also stocked full of the latest flyers.

Mercearia da Atalaia Lisbon (by Andreia Tavares)

I admit I am a lazy cook and have more than a couple of gastronomic faux pas’ to account for, my fondness for meals that limit their preparation to just adding water being one of them. That said, if perhaps incoherently, I do love good food and gourmet stores have me drooling.

This mercearia (grocer’s in Portuguese) is a case in point. Everything here is exquisite (and much made nationally). There are delicious biscuits and hand-made bon bons, freshly baked bread, oils and vinegars, traditional jams and jellies, herbs and spices, olives, coffees and teas, patés, sausages and cheeses. There’s a pretty good wine selection too. Mmmmmm…..

And to take indulgence out of the kitchen and into your bathroom, a gorgeous selection of aromatic soaps, creams and soaking salts are available also.

I’m a sucker for good presentation, and this store retains a touch of tradition within a modern, stylish space. Everything here is so well organized and nicely packaged that it’s a feast for the eyes as well.

MOOD Lisbon (by Andreia Tavares)

There’s been a buzz about this store since it opened last September, but I had mixed notions of what to find. Clothing? Toiletries? Artwork? Books? Furniture? Jewelry? Booze? Try all of the above…and then some. Bearing in mind we all have – surprise – moods, this place specializes in diversity and houses such an array of cool stuff that you’re bound to find something to satisfy yours.

Whether it’s for the beautifully-wrapped soaps, the funky lingerie or the Indian silks, this store is really fun to peruse and I find it hard to come away empty-handed as there is always something unexpected or that I’ve just got to have.

There are quirky items of all sorts: a golden deer head to hang on the wall, limited-edition bottles of Absolut and Chivas, a pet wear section, “Bridal” vs. “Fetish” kits, to mention just a few. There are even Smeg refrigerators (why not?!), one of which opens to display an assortment of…uh…”toys”…wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

As for the rollerblading cow that greets you at the entrance, all I have to say is MOO!

Officina Profumo Santa Maria Novella Lisbon (by Andreia Tavares)

I like pretty stores that sell nice-smelling things in beautiful packages. Stocked full of colognes, creams, soaps and lots more to delight the body and the senses, Officina Profumo is a pamper haven that exudes understated elegance.

This Florentine perfumery and pharmacy has been around for ages. Since 1612, to be exact. And usually, if you’ve been doing something for almost four hundred years and are still around, chances are you’re doing it right. A favourite of royals from Italy to Russia to India and beyond, its products still follow the centuries-old formulas and hands-on techniques used by the Dominican friars that founded it. As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

So, with all manner of elixirs in exotic scents like clover, sandalwood, gardenia and citrus, you’ll be tempted to leave the mundane behind and slip into sensory bliss…

Think I’m getting carried away? You bet. And I like it.

Oficina à Lapa - Concept Store Lisbon (by Andreia Tavares)

These days, it’s hard to steer completely clear of IKEA and the like, but a few choice pieces amidst your Lacks and Bjurstas do wonders to divert attention from Blah to Fab!

Enter Oficina à Lapa, an interior-decorating store with a boutique feel that brings out the decorating junkie in me. And whilst you’re unlikely to be able to pack a table or chairs into a suitcase, there are a bunch of travel-friendly items to add pizzazz to your home décor, not to mention being handy conversation pieces for the verbally challenged.

This store showcases an eclectic mix of cool and interesting items and, thankfully, not a Mies or Corbusier rip-off in sight. Much, in fact, is of original Portuguese design.

The Noova chandeliers made from plastic coat hangers are simply, well, de-lightful. I’m also a big fan of the colourful cabbage-leaf tableware by Bordallo Pinheiro – though not to be overdone, they serve as delicious and slightly kitschy accent pieces on an otherwise streamlined table service.

Other goodies include picture frames, jewellery and a collection of handbags by MUU.

Pedra Dura Lisbon (by Rita)

If you happen to be in town for business, there are a lot of nice places to go and spend a relaxing time around the financial district.

One of my favorite places to splurge during lunch break is Pedra Dura. This is Lisbon’s nicest jewellery store (located in Monumental – a small shopping mall and movie theater in Saldanha).

The main quality of this spot is the extreme uniqueness of the pieces on display. One can spend hours exploring an immensity of cabinet drawers, filled with the most eclectic and original designs.

They also make cute and eco-friendly gift-wraps, so “Pedra Dura” could also be a great option for souvenirs.

The price tags can be sometimes harsh, but there are also “wallet-friendly” (and equally lovely) options)!

Pó dos Livros Bookstore Lisbon (by Claudio Carneiro)

Call me old-fashioned, but “Pó dos Livros (books’ dust)” bookstore is the authentic bookstore.

First, you can go in there and touch the books, read the books, change the books on the shelves (probably this would be too much), and nobody is going to ask you what do you want. In a bookstore this is the best thing that can happen, because I always want to try to find “the book” by myself before asking for help.

And second and last, and this is the most important characteristic of this bookstore, is that if you need help and ask for help, the owners of the bookstore will bring down the world to satisfy you. Sometimes I don’t remember the author, or the title, or I just remember the book is about something very particular. No problem, here they come with the exact book I am looking for. And they understand all about it, they tell you what are the following releases of our favourite writers, they tip the writers we don’t know but certainly we would enjoy reading and always makes me come back, because, you know, one book leads to another.

The owner, Jaime Bulhosa, also runs a blog for the bookstore, where he and his team suggest and write about new and old releases and publicize and the bookstore events. And of course, you can ask them anything and order any book through their blog.

Also at the bookstore there is a tiny lovely cafe, where we can have all the time in the world to drink a tea or a coffee while we browse some pages in a total solitude.

Solar Lisbon (by Veronica)

Solar is the reference shop for traditional Azulejos (Portuguese Tiles). Being in the same place for more than 50 years, Solar breathes History by itself.

The store is divided in several sections that separate the tiles by time periods (here you can even find tiles from the 15th century!). This is the most up close and personal way of seeing and feeling history without being in a museum.

It is a family business, sof you will feel welcomed like you were a part of the family. You must definitely have a chat with the owner, who’s always happy to share is passion for tiles. He’ll explain you everything you wish to know and will also add some interesting historical facts about the pieces shown for sale.

Once you enter the store, try to discover as much as you can and prepare yourself to be here for quite a while, because it will be a morning or a afternoon that you won’t regret.

Probably, the first feeling you will get will be “I want to buy a big panel”, but lets be modest – if you buy just one tile, it will also be history you are taking home.

Vee’s favorites: Bird tiles, the view at the back.

Rita’s favorites: Some of the big tile panels, wish I could afford it though!

The Wrong Shop Lisbon (by Veronica)

The Wrong Shop is the perfect store to get a different souvenir from Lisbon. It represents a new side of the city, an original and filled with design kind of Lisbon.

It shows how very classic and representative products of our city and country are used outside its context. This is a store dedicated to people who live in Lisbon as well as people who visit Lisbon.

You can find a lot of cool stuff here, like funny “Elegance money” (a fake 500€ note) or typical “Barcelos” roosters painted with edgy neon colors, perfect to had a Portuguese touch in your living room.

You can also pick a T-Shirt with the Lisbon subway map so you won’t get lost, or even a paper “disposable” wedding ring, just in case you change your mind.

If you are bored of the traditional style souvenirs, you must visit this store and we’re sure you will surprise your friends when you get home!

The first time I ran into this store I felt like I was in DisneyLand. Probably I’m exaggerating a little bit, but that’s the closest impression I can define. Until now, it’s like a box full of surprises. The name itself says a little bit of what the store is about. Zen, well-being, comfort, relaxation and son on. Well, that’s true, for I can find there the best incenses I have smelled, a bunch of them! Add to it a wide variety of massage essence oils, plus, you know, therapy shampoos, therapy soap bars and all kinds of therapy stuff I can think of. But that’s not all.

If I have to buy a gift for a friend, this is the right place to go.  Mainly if I have no idea of what I am going to buy. Perhaps a fabric coin pig, or a inflated gift bag, one of the very creative Koziol products, some hand made jewerly, Millefiori candles,  or maybe a very original cushion, or a cd with good music, or clothes, or a postcard…Well, you got the picture, didn’t you?

Nowadays I try to avoid going there, since it’s impossible not to buy anything. Like going to Disneyland!

Zilian Lisbon (by Rita)

Everyone knows that a good pair of shoes is hard to find, even more if you want affordable prices. Fear no more, Zilian is here!!

If you are a girl, then you have reached shoe heaven! As proud shoe-aholic girls, we felt like our prayers were heard since this store opened!

Here you can find hip, cool, high, low shoes. All sizes, all colors, all types. It’s basically shoe democracy with a twist. You can find shoes from € 20 until € 200, but the average is € 70/80.

The store has a pretty smart layout, with more than 4500 shoes to choose from. Yes, you read right: 4500!!

Once you get there, there’s no turning back. Just find the big cube displaying your shoe size and go crazy! Don’t dare to leave the store empty handed, since the odds of finding the shoes there when you return are pretty slim!

Since they’ve opened, they’ve added some good services from having Nespresso – just take your pick! to Valet service for free.

Rita’s Favorites: Amazing mary janes and summer sandals

Vee’s Favorites: Ballet slipers, confy and stylish.
