Fábulas has a special place in my heart, and while I can think of many reasons why that is, I don’t doubt for a second that it will also charm your socks off as soon as you enter the place.
In a prime location in the Chiado area, this place has two entrances: one on the steps of Calçada Nova de São Francisco and another through the courtyard in the nº19 of Rua Garrett. While there is outdoor seating where you will be able to have a glass of wine and enjoy the sunshine, the real treat will be inside the cafe.
It may be old fashioned and maybe even a bit austere, with its exposed stone walls… but the mismatched furniture, the old lampshades and sofas that could well belong in your great grandmother’s house, and the old sewing machines used as tables give this place an allure of its own, and may well make you feel that you’ve been transported to a different time and setting.
Fábulas is opened until late in the evening, so I can recommend it either for a quick snack or for dinner. In any case, do try out their chocolate cake and don’t forget to take a look at the art displayed on the walls.
