Rua do Carmo, as a well known shopping street, has seen many businesses come, and many others go. Stores close and give space to fresh new ones, and a lot of very well known brands around the world have a spot in this busy street. But I really don’t think any other store in Lisbon can evoke such charm and elegance as Luvaria Ulisses.
This store was created in 1925, and it is exclusively dedicated to selling leather gloves. It may well be the tiniest store in this city – it can only hold one person at a time, and to be honest it’s hard to notice it on the street at first. The art déco interior from the 1920s remains unaltered since the store first opened, and it’s worth looking at it. The manufacturing process remained the same through the years: you rest your elbow on a pillow so that your hand is measured and you end up with hand made gloves of top quality.
In a time when fashion changes so quickly and unforgivingly, it puts a smile on my face to know that some things don’t change and that this store, many years after opening, continues its business delivering the same as it once did: hand made leather gloves made with much hard work, dedication and love.
