David is the typical Marisqueira (Portuguese seafood restaurant): simple, unpretentious and with the best traditional food! The restaurant’s décor is as kitsch as one can imagine, with a Michelangelo David replica printed on some serious ugly wall tiles, plain tableware and paper tablecloths and napkins. There is nothing charming about it, but at the same time, this will definitely add a touch of authenticity to the whole experience! This is the place where old men go to watch football games and drink beer, but you will also find all sort of different crowds hanging there just for the food. We recommend going here with a local, who’ll explain to you the different options available on menu, otherwise, if you’re not comfortable with the language, going to David can be rather challenging! Vee’s favourites – “Bulhão Pato” Clams (typical Portuguese dish of clams with garlic and coriander), Octopus Rice and “Panachê” (Tap Beer with Sprite). Rita’s favourites – “Caracóis” (it’s a very special snails stew that you eat with the help of a toothpick), Clams and the classic “Tremoços and Imperial” (White lupin seeds and Tap Beer). Hello.
We are a young couple living near by and we simply love David! Its quite a simple place, but the food is great and the waiters (specially Mr. Garcia) are very nice. We never, ever had problems and we go there often. And if you ask for a digestive drink, they put the bottle in the table. Fantastic!
Visiting Lisbon without going to David is really a waist!
I’m sorry for that. Personally i never had that type of problems there. But it is true, that foreigners sometimes get “wrong” bills in the more traditional restaurants. The best thing really is to go with a local so no mistakes happen.
Good food but they tried to cheat me on the bill! After looking at a chicken scratch ‘home-made’ bill, I realized the waiter had erroneously inflated the price by 7€. That’s to say he knowingly overcharged us. When we brought it up he tried cover things up by offering us free drinks. We finally got the correct bill but if it hadn’t been for a closer look, I’d say Watch out!
