I went back to a place that is reminiscent of my youth at Belém quarter with Kevin, a new friend and blogger for Spotted By Locals, Antwerp. After passing by Pastéis de Belém mid-afternoon, I saw that it was full… and I mean, really full: Tourists taking photos, checking their iPhones for a new tip or the latest news, families in elbow-fighting mode, kids screaming… Oh man, I just wanted a quiet place for a coffee or a cake. I love this place, but I always recommend people visit it after hours (around 21:00 or even later!).
So I told Kevin: -“Hey, let’s go to a place I know, and if there are more than 2 people inside… you buy me a beer?” He agreed, I guess he wasn’t expecting a place to be completely empty in a touristy area such as this. But it was… and for a while we were the only ones inside. So I won a cake!
Mr. Guilherme, who has run the place since the 80s, told us where the beer cakes are made, why are they sooooo good and why this place was empty. Strangely, he isn’t bothered with that. The business is running, locals are coming as usual, some tourists too, because (and I thought I was alone here!) they don’t want to wait 1/2 hour in a queue! So eventually, they’ll come and buy something.
Try a cake, a beer, or both! They’re really sweet and fresh! Try to stop, if you can! haha ;).
