Winter is mostly a time of cold temperatures and unpleasant weather. If we get courageous enough to travel around, we wouldn’t want to trudge through the new-fallen snow or last days’ slush, but rather stay inside some fancy bar and observe the surroundings over a tea or coffee cup. But people are different and when traveling in winter around European capitals I’ve often met adventurous people who wished to do something physical, especially in snow and sunny weather.

Ljubljana has one such perk to offer and it’s easily accessible from the city center. If you follow the road to the city castle you might spot it from the children’s racket, just around the first curve on the road. Part of the castle hill which faces the northeast part of the city, when covered with snow, becomes a popular sledding ground for children and adults of all ages. All you need are sleds or a plastic bag to sit on and let go a few hundred meters from the top downhill. While descending, you’ll be rewarded with a view you won’t find on panorama postcards.

Bringing your friends or family can double the fun if you decide to race, but please mind the younger children and the slippery, sometimes frozen ground when climbing up.
