Dunajska pekarna is a simple bakery, which can be found next to a beautiful pathway along Ljubljanica river. As an honest spotter, I cannot say that this is the best bakery in Ljubljana, but it is still my favorite one. The reason for this is simple – they offer various baking goods, ranging from traditional French croissants to small pizzas, for very affordable prices.

When you take a nice, relaxing and romantic walk along the Ljubljanica riverside, you will probably stop in one of the many bars along the way and drink a beer or two. Before you go home, you will probably want a quick and cheap snack, just to regain your energy. Besides all the standard bread variations as mentioned before, you will also be able to enjoy a warm and semi-traditional Slovenian fast food dish, called Burek – a simple, yet delicious pie, filled with either cottage cheese or minced meat. Bon appétit or as we locals would say – dober tek!

Like in every city, Ljubljana offers bakeries on every corner. Literally. But there is one that stands out from the crowd – Bakery Žak. Let me tell you a little secret – I love croissants, pizzas, bureks and everything related to bread. I have eaten in numerous bakeries in Slovenia and abroad, but Bakery Žak is one of the best out there.

Bakery Žak or just Žak in short, is located in the heart of city centre. Because all the locals know that this is the best bakery in Ljubljana, you will always find a line of five or ten people standing in front of you, waiting to get their hands on Žak’s croissant.

The downside of Žak are the prices, which can become sky high. Small, chocolate filled croissant costs around € 2 and panzerotti – Italian pie, filled with fresh tomatoes, goat cheese and basil, costs up to € 3 or € 4. It is up to you, if you are willing to pay the high price, but trust me on this one – you will be rewarded with great taste and feeling very satisfied!

There are good bakeries, there are bad ones and they are old and newer ones. Stara pekarna 1931 bakery is a mixture of the first and third. Established in 1931 by and old man, who was widely known as simply ‘Mister Baker’, Stara pekarna 1931 is one of the oldest still up-and-running bakeries in Ljubljana. Older people still recall this bakery as the best one in Slovenia; some even say that Stara pekarna 1931 has been the best one in Yugoslavia.

Nowadays Stara pekarna 1931 is modern and a relatively big place where you can choose from varieties of baked goods. Maybe you’re in the mood for a small, delicious pizza or you just having cravings for simple, basic bread – Stara pekarna 1931 has everything.

Don’t be surprised by the habit of locals here – almost everybody takes a tiny carton of yogurt with their baked goods. Some people just say that bread goes down easier with it and others say that they need to stick to tradition. Just decide for yourself.
