At the moment I can still say that I had lived in Šiska district for more than half of my life but one of the best things for us when we were children – not that we wouldn’t do that as an adults, just the winters are rarely that cold as they used to be – was Koseski bajer which is a pond in Koseze neighbourhood.

This small artificial lake would freeze over and we’d ice-skate on it. What used to be a clay pit, in last years serves mainly fishermen, modellers who are playing here with their favourite toys and of course to Slovenian characteristic, which is exercising, like jogging or cycling around it. There is a footpath that goes around it with several benches along the way.

Koseski bajer lies on the foothills of Roznik and Šisenski hrib which are hills between here and the centre. These places are included in a natural protected area. The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship passes by the pond and that’s why this altogether is Mecca for nature lovers. New sitting areas were constructed last summer so you should definitely check it out.

In the other part there is lovely bar called after Dolenjska (Lower Carniolia – Slovene region) wine pride Cvicek that offers great view on the pond and pristine atmosphere of Ljubljana’s suburbs.

Between Kongresni trg and Maximarket, there is a small, dark and slightly smelly underpass, which has a hidden gem inside or to put it better – downside. Znalček it is a tiny shop, full of gizmos, toys and other products, which are based on simple and hard puzzle solving games.

Opened few years ago by young and enthusiastic owner, Znalček offers products, that will teach and help you to expand your horizon and keep yourself occupied for hours. Bear in mind that Znalček it is not only a shop, but a place where you can go with your friends, socialize and put your brain to work on interesting and mentally challenging games.

The best part is that all this is completely for free – if you like any of displayed gizmos, you can buy it, otherwise just kindly thank the shop owner or give him a modest donation. It will be fun to see your travel companion trying to solve something simple, yet mind blowing!

Most of the cities in Europe have rivers running through them and Ljubljana is no exception. Ljubljanica is a powerful and magnificent river with abundant water. Although most of the river side of Ljubljanica remained the same throughout the centuries, some parts had already been altered in ancient times, when Romans needed a faster road link from the quarry to various construction sites.

In 1772 the construction of the Grubar channel between Castle and Golovec hills had started, which still today remains one of the nicest spots in Ljubljana. Ljubljanica had an important traffic role until the completion of the road and later the railway line between Vienna and Trieste. Because of that, many nice spots from different historical periods can be found along the river side.

Some say that Ljubljanica has magical powers and one can fall in love with Ljubljana just by seeing the river, which runs through it. When you visit Ljubljana, be sure to take a few hours or even better – take the whole day – and just walk along the river side. On your journey, you will come across many cafés, restaurants and plain spots, surrounded by beautiful and intact nature. Sit down by the river, relax and simply enjoy as we locals do.

Because of its small size, Ljubljana is surrounded by nature and nature here equals sport activities. If your check other spots recommended by us, you will see that you could easily go running everywhere during the summer and do some winter activities during the winter time. One of the spots that my friends in Ljubljana go to is Horse Club Trnovo, where you can go horseback riding. They say it is awesome and it is not hard to believe them.

Equestrianism and riding are a century old tradition in Slovenia and nowadays, horseback riding is more popular than ever. If you came to Ljubljana with your partner and children there is nothing to worry about – horse riding is one of the few things in the world that both children and adults can be easily persuaded to try it out. Horse riding is a sport in nature, which can be done all year round, so don’t feel pressured about the time you pick to visit Ljubljana.

Horse Club Trnovo is a small, but very affordable and decent horseback riding club, where you will be able to enjoy and relax without spending tons of money.

Yep, trains. Some people consider spotting trains as a hobby, but for many, trains are just one way of transportation. Since Slovenia and especially Ljubljana have a really bad transportation system by air and through roads, there is a good possibility that you will need to use a train service. When you will get off at the main train station in Ljubljana, be sure to look at the cart in which you sat before for hours. There is a chance you will see some spectacular graffiti.

Graffiti artists know that trains are a moving target and are often guarded, when waiting for their next route on the train station. This fact represents a challenge and there are some who risk being fined or even the possibility to spend a night in jail, just to show the world their masterpiece. And by masterpiece, I really mean masterpiece. When you check Slovenian trains, you will find graffiti of numerous shapes, painted in million color combinations. Take a picture, show it to your friends and proudly say you arrived in Ljubljana in a moving gallery.
