2 Willow Road – Ernö Goldfinger’s modernist mansion

Hungarian Modernist architect ‪Ernő Goldfinger‬’s most famous London imprint is probably the Trellick Tower, the 1970s brutalist housing estate in Chelsea. Its radical offset service shaft has become an icon of 21st century London, but there’s a lesser known gem in Hampstead that architecture fans won’t want to miss.

2 Willow Road, overlooking the Heath, was built by Goldfinger for his family in 1939 and offers a unique insight into the daily life of London’s adopted Modernism master. The house is almost as it was when Goldfinger lived there, save a few tourist-friendly modifications like a small cinema in the garage, where a tour of the house starts.

A visit will highlight the unique design flares that make 2 Willow Road truly special: its futuristic structure, ‪Ernő‬’s furniture prototypes, interior design to die for and the Goldfingers’ incredible collection of modern art, including rare examples of Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and many more.

You can wander in at will from 15:00 – 17:00 when the house is open, but go for one of the tours (11:00, 12:00, 13:00 or 14:00) for an extra special experience.
