This is not a place for grown-ups and there are several other coffee bars in Balham which are adult-friendly which you may care to visit if you believe that the world does not revolve around kids. As for the "barrel distortion", the cafe was in a junction of 2 roads and their main facade is facing the corner instead of one side of the road.
