When my friends and I first moved to Tufnell Park we used to treat ourselves to takeaway Thai food from the Blue Moon Café every other Saturday. The spicy curry dishes with juicy aubergine slices and fragrant sweet basil leaves fitted perfectly with our evening schedule of cold beers and funny films.
It wasn’t until much later that I discovered another dimension to the Blue Moon: eating inside the restaurant!
It was something that happened quite by chance. My girlfriend and I were sitting in another restaurant in the area (I shan’t name names) and the service was horrendous. We had waited over 20 minutes and hadn’t even received our drinks, which we had actually ordered at the bar before being seated. Then somebody behind us exclaimed that his dish had meat in it – when he had specifically ordered the vegetarian option. That was the final straw: we left sharpish.
This irritating experience only served to highlight the supreme service skills of the staff at the Blue Moon. Our waitress wore a wide grin, almost stretching from ear-to-ear, as she attentively took down our orders and recommended we try the starter platter.
As we are both satay fiends we jumped at the chance to get some peanut chicken inside us. The fish cakes and spring rolls that accompanied it were equally tasty.
For mains we shared sticky stir-fried duck and sweet Massaman chicken peanut curry. A few minutes later we both had smiles on our faces as big as the waitress’.
