Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that London hosted the 2012 Olympic Games. Part of the objective of hosting the games in East London was to regenerate the neglected area and Crate Brewery is one of the many places that we’ve welcomed.
A microbrewery producing ales on site, Crate is a stylish venue housed in an old print works, on the Lee Navigation offshoot of the Hertford Union Canal. White tiled walls and minimalist wooden benches make up the decor; a hip East End crowd pack it both during the week and at weekends.
There are plenty of bottled beers but the ones on tap – brewed on site – are my favourite, particularly the sweet Golden Ale. You can now find Crate beers stocked around the city, so this is the perfect spot to enjoy one in its home. The food is strictly pizza from the stone oven – the margarita is a classic with fresh cherry tomatoes and is perfect with a draught beer; the spiced salami is a modern classic and the sweet potato and gorgonzola is akin to an orgasm. Simple, but superb.
