It might not look much from the outside, but Satan’s Whiskers is one of my favourite cocktail bars in East London. Blink and you’ll miss its tiny neon signage, but a short walk from Bethnal Green tube station and Victoria Park lies this wonderful spot.
The decor has a New York/speakeasy feel, with vintage posters and mad taxidermy (like a smoking monkey) also making an appearance. There are intimate booths as well as two-seater tables. When I visit I approach the cocktail menu (which changes daily) like an Olympic decathlete, working my way through a number of events with the challenge of trying to stand up when I leave.
The ‘Satan’s Whiskers’ itself is a good place to start; I also like an ‘Old Pal’ (a Negroni with whiskey) and something fruity like an East 8 Hold Up (with pineapple and Aperol). There aren’t many I haven’t tried and I’ve never been disappointed.
Often at cocktail bars the food menu is overlooked – merely a way of extracting more cash from drunk punters – but not at Satan’s Whiskers. Choose from the ‘two finger’ or ‘four finger’ menu – there are scallops, ribs, wraps and sweet potato fries. To top it off, the playlist is strictly hip hop, making this entire drinking and dining experience truly unique.
