Once a sleazy strip club frequented only by perverts, the Crown and Shuttle pub near the city is now a haven for beer and food lovers. Ales, wines and spirits flow, alongside delicious British food, from burgers to ribs and everything in between.
The reason I return to the Crown and Shuttle time and time again, though, is to get drunk in the whopping beer garden. The pub itself is fairly diminutive, with intimate seating and small tables, but the expanse out the back is this venue’s gem. Plenty of furniture fills the space, which is surrounded by plants and vintage decorations. Even through the colder months, it’s packed from lunchtime until closing. Don’t let that put you off, though: the crowd is friendly and welcoming, preferably at weekends when the city boys return to their country piles that they’ve purchased with bonuses funded by our taxes.
Try the crab mac & cheese, try the Dark Star Pale Ale and try your luck with a local. It’s wonderful.
