I had a fantastic dining experience at the vegetarian Gate restaurant in Angel for my birthday earlier this year and have been going back on a frequent basis ever since. The restaurant front facing the street is mostly glass, upon entering you are confronted by a big black theatrical curtain. Once you pull it to the side the maître D’ is there to take your booking and escort you to your seat. While it’s a spacious restaurant the table candles and furnishing make it feel intimate and by 20:00 on a Tuesday night the restaurant was full. The atmosphere was abuzz and the food was delicious.
The best dish by far is actually a mezze platter of starters to be shared between two people. You get to try nearly every starter from beetroot ravioli and Indian spiced potato chat to caramelised onion tart and plantain fritters.
The service is smooth and while the waiters are happy to help, they don’t overcrowd you and aren’t overly chatty. There is also an inventive cocktail list though we ordered freshly squeezed juice mocktails which went down a treat.
