The Well & Bucket – East End pub with sliders!

The Well & Bucket opened in 1818 and closed in 1989. Until 2012, the premises were occupied by a hideous leather wholesalers that anybody compos mentis would avoid with peril. In a glorious twist of fate the Well & Bucket reopened and is now one of my favourite East End boozers.

The shop fittings were removed to reveal original tiles from the pub’s previous glory days. Some are missing, but this adds to the location’s charm. The missing tiles serve as a reminder of the pub’s illustrious history, while eerie artwork of Victorian ladies with skulls for faces adds to the pub’s mystical atmosphere.

The pub has a huge selection of craft beers. I’m fond of the Old Dominion from the USA and you can’t beat Camden Hells brewed just up the road. There are lots of English beers on draught, plenty of porter to go with your oysters and cask ales on rotation.

Don’t let the pub’s limited food menu put you off. If you’re not in the mood to try their oysters or a bucket of prawns, order some sliders instead: blackened catfish + portobello mushroom with blue cheese + the good ol’ fashioned cheeseburger with slow roasted tomatoes + craft beer = happy Matt.
