Named the “Green Ring”, the “Anillo Verde” surrounds Madrid between M30 and M40 highways. It’s a perfect route to ride, run or just walk if you don’t want to be far away from the city. The complete circle is 65 km. I always go biking. You don’t have to ride all the way round. I sometimes just ride a part of it if it’s getting dark and I’m feeling tired.
Anillo Verde showcases the importance of exercise among the madrileños if you thought that sport wasn’t much practised in the city. It is always full of people! By bike, riding at 22 km per hour you can complete it in 3 hours. 4.5 hours if you ride around 15 km/h. On foot it will take you up to 11 hours if you do 6 km per hour.
From the North you pass nearby those big four skyscrapers (Cuatro Torres Business Area), going down clockwise you pass Campo de las Naciones, Vicálvaro, Vallecas, Villaverde, Carabanchel…Then the big park Casa de Campo, very nice next to the Manzanares river riding up. The entire journey has its ups and downs constantly. Perhaps the Montecarmelo area (North West) is the hardest climbing ride (clockwise). I strongly recommend you to ride Anillo Verde. I do it several times a year. It is amusing going with friends, equipped with some fruit and sandwiches and to stop wherever you want to have a break.
