My favorite Javier Bardem role is from the 1982 film Jamón Jamón (Penelope’s break out role) where he plays a garlic-breathed beefcake. If you like garlic, you’ll love his family restaurant which pays tribute to Javier Bardem‘s screen successes by naming the dishes after various films or roles. You feel like you’re in the Bardem living room because the place is decorated with family heirlooms and photos of young Javier. If you forget to make a reservation, you can hang out at the bar, but don’t miss out on the food (note, lunch isn’t served until 13:30 and dinner service starts around 21:00). The menu selection covers the whole gamut of Spanish cooking with lots of fried foods and ham and a few salads. The rations are big, so the dishes are perfect for sharing – the croquetas “Jamón Jamón” (ham croquettes) are great, as is the Morcilla “Mas fea del mundo” (the ugliest blood sausage in the world) and the Tortilla “Mar Adentro” (“The Sea Inside” Spanish omelette). I had dinner with a friend at Bardemcilla last summer and it was one of the nicest experiences I’ve had in a restaurant in Madrid. I lived there for 2 years and ate out at least twice a week. The croquetas are very nice and what’s even better is the pimienta pequillo stuffed with cod…excellent! I found the staff polite and patient. In fact, I am going back this coming Friday. I would recommend this restaurant to Spaniards and foreigners alike.
I went out of my way to find this restaurant and what a diappointment-cute decor but the waiter was probably working for the first time-didn/t have a clue and could not handle 3 tables! The menu del dia had problably the tiniest portions I have ever had at lunchtime! Cute idea but forgettable!
I still stand by my recommendation of Bardemcilla for tourists – the food is typical Spanish, the place is extremely special. His family runs the place so it’s like a glimpse into their creative public/private lives. I’ve never had a bad meal there, the waiters are always charming and every one of my guests has enjoyed it!
Hello, I’m from Madrid too, and I would never recommend this restaurant to anybody, much less to a visitor from abroad. Javier Bardem is top quality when it comes to performing, but has probably one of the worst restaurants in town. I went there with a large group of friends not too long ago and so we decided to ask for almost every dish on the menu and share them all. Not one was good, tasty, or original. A single meal in this place would completely ruin the reputation of Spanish cuisine during a foreigner’s visit. Sorry Javier, concentrate on your acting. That’s where you excel.
