You can find really good bread in Spain, but it´s true it´s different from what you find in other countries (some people find the outside crust to hard). But since you are in Spain I would recommend an Spanish bakery (any local one in the suburbs has really good bread) and taste it.

Thanks for your comment, Liz.

I will have to try Pan Europeo - I'm very partial to LPQ as they always have out samples and they're on my way home from work!

Thanks for the tip, Liz, I didn't know about their roscones! I have yet to be impressed by a roscón - I've tried lots in Spain and they all seem dry and bready to me.
I have tried the torrijas for Easter and just about everything else at San Onofre, but this year we'll try the roscón for Three King's day.

This place has hands down the best Roscón de los Reyes in Madrid, and maybe in all of Spain. If you don´t order ahead of time, you will be waiting two hours for one. Well worth the wait. Worlds away from grocery store roscones

Thanks for the comment, I totally agree. I've spent 20 euros on a meal there, but it was well worth it because the food is so good! Viva la Vida is a great example of how rich and hearty vegetarian food can be.

The first place I go when eating out in Madrid. Great for veggies and non-veggies in search of an alternative to the usual offerings. A good variety of salads, wraps, and hot savoury food, plus wonderful desserts to take away or lurk on the few chairs. The only problem is that it can get expensive if you stuff a large box with heavy stuff.. but it's worth it!

Thanks for the comments. I do agree that salads in Spain can be lacking, the one at Casa Mingo is akin to something you might be served on an airplane, so your best bet here is to focus on the rest of the menu. I have sampled numerous roasted chickens in Madrid, however, and the flavor and price at Casa Mingo is more than reasonable - each chicken serves at least 2 people and is always cooked to perfection...that's what they do best! If you need a really good salad, try EcoCentro, I can't get enough of their self-serve salad bar.

We went to Casa Minga last week but to be honest apart from the Cidre which I thought was delicious and morish I thought this restaurant was very over rated and over priced. €10.50 for a medium sized chicken! €5.50 for a bottle of Cidre and the salad was very basic (the bulk of which was lettuce leaves and tomatoes). Don't believe the hype! We found much better restaurants elsewhere.
