The “Mercado de San Miguel” is one of the oldest covered markets in Madrid. It was recently refurbished and now offers and whole new concept of market. You can actually go and buy good fruits, cheese (more than 100 different varieties) and fish among others things… you can also have oysters with a glass of wine while reading a book bought in the library recently opened inside the place.
Its 33 shops offer a great variety of the best delicatessen delicatessen products in a magnificent setting. It can be called the market of this century even though the Market is almost one hundred years old (it was constructed in 1916).
Mercado de San Miguel has recently gained a new appearance, but you can recognize the metal structure of its original construction (the only one surviving in Madrid). Located near “la Plaza Mayor“, it has certainly become the soul of the square!

My colleague and I happened upon the Mercado de San Miguel during our weekend in Madrid. What a fantastic experience. We spent several wonderful hours there on a Saturday afternoon enjoying good wine, tapas, a great environment and a diverse mix of people. It was the highlight of our trip and made our stay in Madrid simply perfect. The stuffed olives and the Granache were indescribable!
St Miguel was my best Madrid experience!
Excellent food, local wine, great atmosphere… & value for money
Thanks for the comments!!
Yeah it is indeed a great place to go.
The Mercado San Miguel is a must in Madrid, and if you love seafood we highly recommend you to come and visit us at our oyster bar! Our oysters come from a french family tradition, each of them specially prepared for the delight of everyone, a great moment to stop and enjoy the market while eating delicious oysters and drinking a glass of wine!

Our friend absolutely adores oysters and we are going to Madrid for her 40th birthday party. Is there a way that we can book a table at your oyster venue for the 9th March for dinner? I couldn’t find the booking option from your website. Thank you.
You can book a table at the mercado de San Miguel…..sorry.
Thanks for your opinion!
I love to go there in the evenings for a real good wine.
Then afterwards we cross the street and get a wonderful tortilla at the Meson de la Tortilla, one of the caves-mesones accounting for centuries of history of the Plaza Mayor. Great Spot!
Thanks!! It is a great place to go.
Fantastic place, we gorged on cakes, crisps and tapas. Wish we’d had more time.
I stumbled on Mercado de San Miguel by accident too. I thought it was a fabulous place and it made for one of my most memorable lunch spots! I, too, wrote a post about it: http://juliegilley.typepad.com/my_far_and_away_blog/2011/02/mercado-de-san-miguel-the-best-lunch-in-madrid.html
Thanks Aine, it is a real great place to go.
