Mercado San Ildefonso has all the qualities to stay strong as the trendiest place in Madrid. It is already located in one of the trendiest neighborhoods, Malasaña, and it has been improved right in time for the summer season, so everything else just fell into place.
It is a regular building that has been refurbished to accommodate food stands, bars, and two indoor terraces. That is just the market space, the top floors have tourist apartments available. If you happen to be walking down Fuencarral street you may even miss it, because the ground level seems like a regular multi-bar space.
You need to come inside and discover the different options they offer. And those are typical Spanish products at every stand, prepared meals that you can have right there or take away. Small portions or “tapas” is what I’ve found at San Ildefonso Market, something to eat and go.
The terrace at the second floor is my favorite spot, it’s the perfect place to cool down on a hot summer afternoon. On the third floor is the cocktail bar and soft rock & roll is always playing like it’s in the back of your head. In regards to the food, every tapa I have tried was very good, nothing too elaborate, but good quality products and friendly prices.
