A Madrid classic, right in the centre of La Latina. This bar is down a pedestrian street hidden away behind the main thoroughfare of the Cava Baja. Calle Almendro in itself is a great place to go in search of interesting little bars. Almendro 13 is one of the oldest and most authentic.
They specialise in sherries and wines, and at peak times they are really a fast food joint! On Sundays, the busiest day of the week in La Latina, don’t be surprised if you have to queue for a bit before you get your table. Just think that the fact there is a queue tells you this place is worth the wait! When it’s busy it runs self-service style – order your food from the window and your drinks at the bar. Go on an evening at the beginning of the week though, and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed.
In terms of food, I go for the roscas every time. These are basically giant filled bagels – perfect for sharing with a group. Although if there’s more than two of you, you’ll need to order a few to keep you all going! I like the ones with cheese – lacón y queso or jamón y brie are my two favourites.
