Bar Turkana is not only a bar with an African name, but it’s a humanitarian project, their bar just being a sort of upgrade to it. 100% of the bar’s income goes straight to “Surgery in Turkana”, which is a group of medical doctors, mostly surgeons who have been going, since the year 2004, to a region of Turkana in the northern part of Kenya to do what they do best, which is treat and perform surgery.
The bar is located close to the top of Cuesta de Segovia and therefore offers one of the best views in the area. You can enjoy the views even better from the first floor, where there is a very spacious and bright room with a couple of tables. All in all the bar is very pleasant, forthcoming and simple. Walls are covered with paintings with colorful African motives, pictures of surgeons at work and smiling Kenyans. You can feel that it has a wider purpose than just satisfying a thirsty and hungry company.
Of course they do that just fine. Pork loin in olive oil with bread and mashed tomato and a glass of red wine works perfectly when you embrace the autumn sunlight, settling under the Bridge of Segovia (check the Viaducto de Segovia article).
They are very open to hosting bigger groups of people and celebrations of all sorts and I may say that the room I mentioned before on the first floor seems great for the occasion.
To make a difference, it’s enough to have a drink in Turkana.
