I got to know Las Fatigas del Querer back when I was studying French at one of Madrid’s many public language schools. One of my classmates, who is now a good friend of mine, suggested in our group to have dinner together, and organized the whole thing by herself, setting up quite a memorable evening at this restaurant. Since then, even though we have explored other restaurants together, this is our most popular meeting spot.
Las Fatigas del Querer has become one of my favorite traditional Spanish restaurants in Madrid. Everytime we host a first-time visitor to Madrid, we take him or her to Las Fatigas. The combination of great raciones (larger versions of tapas), excellent price, authentic ambiance (the decoration dates from the 1920′s) and superb location of this restaurant provides an unbeatable bang for your buck.
I’m not the only one to think so: this place is usually packed to the brim every single night with locals and foreigners alike, so either arrive early (you can usually find an empty table at 20:00 without issues), or make a reservation by phone in advance. If you arrive too late, don’t despair: you can still do as the madrileños do and have a few drinks at the bar while waiting for an available table. The night’s long in Madrid!
My personal favorites are the ham croquettes, the eggs with ham and potatoes (huevos estrellados con jamón), grilled cuttlefish (sepia a la plancha) and obviously, their Iberian cured ham!
