This place is one of the places to go in Malasaña. It is always busy in the afternoon with people having their coffee, tea or a stronger drink, and a catch-up with friends. I was first taken to this place by my Spanish language exchange partner, and we usually ended up staying for hours, whiling away the afternoon enjoying the chat and the atmosphere. As the evening goes on, it usually gets steadily busier and busier, and it can sometimes be difficult to get a table if you turn up later.
The place was founded in 1979, but was designed to look like the archetypal café from the beginning of the 20th century, with iron railings, marble table-tops, and bronze framed mirrors on the walls. It even has a piano!
They have a great choice of fancy coffees, but I usually order one of their fruit smoothies, which come in a variety of interesting flavour combinations. The last one I tried was carrot and celery! Another thing I love about this place, is it’s one of the many places in the city where you can play board games. They have a huge selection!
