Even though I am not very fan of take away shops, I have to recognize that I love this place! It’s a piece of Mexico in Madrid. You can choose among their chicken wings, nuggets or guacamole with jalapenos. There are delicious burritos and tacos for just 1,50 euros each. Really cheap!

The place is very small but it is quite tempting if you are wondering around and start being hungry. Do not miss it!

Take Mexico home and keep enjoying Madrid!

Who said it’s impossible to find waffles in Madrid’s streets? Bravo’s is a very convenient store for getting popcorn, hot dogs and of course “gofres” (waffles) in the very centre of the city.

Just behind the building of FNAC (see the FNAC article) it is possible to buy all those things that are hardly difficult to find in other Madrid´s streets.

There is actually no tradition of having lunch or a dessert while you walk in the street here. And that´s mainly one of the first shocking differences compared to other European cities. (You know, we like to be seated after lunch, have a long chat and enjoy the conversation…)

So, for those who like having a hot and delicious waffle covered with chocolate and cream, Bravo´s (a very Spanish name for the type of food they serve, by the way) is the best option.

One of my favorite pastry shops is hidden just off Gran Via and Fuencarral, though there are several locations around Madrid. I’m a sucker for their chocolate bon bons (€ 1 each, but well worth it), but their specialties lie in seasonal pastries like torrijas for easter week and fresh fruit tarts in the spring and summer. (And apparently their Roscon de Reyes, a special cake for Three Kings Day January 6, is to die for.) Their window displays are worth a visit alone: they are usually quite entertaining and inviting – as only sugar concoctions and chocolate figurines can do.

The shop doesn’t have much room to sit, but you can always stand and enjoy a coffee with a snack, or take your treat to go. If you’re not in a sweet mood, there are also breads and sandwiches prepared daily as well. I’m a big fan of the olive bread.

When you’re out and about on your adventures you always want to stray a little off the common path and find places that not everyone will get to see. Personally I love it when you find those hidden gems. And La Tita Rivera is kind of one of them.

Some might argue that it’s pretty well known in Madrid by now, which is true, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s an incredibly nice bar to have a drink in.

From the outside the place doesn’t look like much but enter and walk through the bar to the end and you’ll find a buzzing patio that you’ll want to spend some time in.

It’s almost more like a garden party than anything else and that’s always appreciated in big cities where green areas (besides parks) are hard to come by.

It’s not a typical dinner place but they have great bar snacks like chicken fingers and mini sandwiches in case you need something between swigs.

The abundance of bars and restaurants in Madrid are just staggering and it seems like there’s a new place opening up every week, at least in the part of Malasaña.

Maricastaña is one of these new places. It’s perfectly suited for people of all ages looking for a fresh and modern place to eat.

The kitchen has a very refreshing view of classic dishes like fried green tomatoes and a local favorite, the croqueta. Croquetas are usually deep fried bechamel balls in many different varieties. Maricastaña makes them with pumpkin and ham and I have not been here a single time without eating them.


It would almost be a crime if I didn’t mention the desserts they serve here, like the cheesecake. They are utterly delicious and completely homemade.

The restaurant is divided into 2 separate floors so there’s always a place to sit and if you arrive without a reservation you should not have to wait very long to get a table.
