I first noticed Aspidistra Books pop up while taking my son to Lego batman. (which I do not recommend) I didn’t go in, but delighted in the incongruence of a bookshop in a glass box with in eye view of a queue to buy movie tickets. I waited until I was alone so that I could explore on my own.
Upon entering I was greeted by Joe the owner who on the facebook page describes the project as a “bookshop and events company dedicated to people who are serious about literature, debate, free thinking and good old fashioned drunken arguing.” This was near my exact experience. I’m not sure how the setting the world to rights had started but by the time I left the shop to fetch my child from school we had covered; Trump, Scotland, flat eathers (an idea Joe was lucky enough to of not encountered until I arrived) and views on what should should be on the National curriculum.
The shop is home to a love of literature and the art of reading. Specializing in politics, history, LGBT, art, & fiction, right there in the entrance to a movie multiplex.
