Kamla Pillay (1991)

About me
I’m Kamla – a Spanish-speaking, mostly vegetarian student. I was born in London and grew up between Birmingham and there before moving to Manchester for university.

I love to travel and try to go to a new place whenever I have the time and money, though my favourite country has to be Spain because of the food, language and weather! When not on holiday, I enjoy exploring Manchester, where I cycle everywhere – both around town and longer distances. I’m also a foodie, keen to try out any new eatery that I happen to walk (or cycle) past.

Why Manchester?
Having lived in the three biggest cities in the UK, I can safely say Manchester is a great place to be. It has a significant history of social movements, meaning that it’s a place steeped in solidarity, something that’s reflected across the city. It’s large enough to have plenty going on and small enough to have a sense of community, which makes it unique.

It’s currently booming, with new restaurants, bars and venues opening on a daily basis, meaning that there are plenty of adventures to be had.

I also love living here because of the accessibility to the countryside, with the Peak District only a half an hour drive away it’s a perfect base for exploring the beautiful scenery of the North West.
