At the beginning of 2016, two friendly, pink-haired women started a crowdfunding project to open a creative cafe in the heart of Withington. They soon succeeded, and a mere two months later I noticed the previously abandoned hair salon become a hive of activity. Whether it be spray painting, decorating or sign making, every time I walked past something new was going on. It finally took shape as Boho Utopia; a café based on the ideal of providing a slow-paced space that allows people to recuperate from the stresses of modern life.
I went to check out the inside a few days after the official opening. Chatting with the owners, I found out that ‘Boho’ is downstairs, a colourfully decorated space with a fine selection of board games. Upstairs is ‘Utopia’, a cushion-lined, fairy light-illuminated room which genuinely feels like a break from city life – and it was surprisingly hard to leave!
I’d recommend coming here for one of the delicious home-made cakes and playing Guess who, or getting chatting to the friendly but slightly eclectic clientèle.
