Central Library – Bookworm heaven

The Christmas markets are undoubtedly the highlight of Manchester in winter but the crowds can be a little difficult to cope with sometimes. Whenever I’m looking for a little peace and quiet from the festive cheer or I’m just too full up on roasted almonds and Glühwein, the Central Library just around the corner from the markets is my go-to escape.

It’s the second largest public lending library in the UK after The Birmingham Library and you’ll enjoy it even if you aren’t a bookworm. The exterior is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and one of my favourite things to do is sit nearby, admire the architecture and watch the world go by. The Corinthian columns are particularly Instagram-worthy.

You need to be a member to take books home with you but if your visit is a fleeting one you can still enjoy the library. One of my favourite things to do is sit in the café with a hot cup of coffee and a graphic novel – the perfect antidote to the miserable Manchester weather!
